About

FELA: MUSIC IS THE WEAPON

Fela: Music Is the Weapon is a graphic novel I spent over a decade researching, writing and illustrating. It’s my attempt to tell Fela’s story in a way that feels as layered, complicated and unapologetically African as the man himself. The book was published by HarperCollins and has since been nominated for both an Eisner and Ringo Award—which is pretty surreal considering where this whole thing started.

“ It’s a remarkable labour of love, and I can only congratulate JIBOLA AND CONOR … for the detailed beauty of your drawings and paintings and for the way in which fela’s story was told.”
Rikki Stein, legendary music manager and cultural producer, best known for managing Fela Kuti and helping bring Afrobeat to global audiences.

The Wildest Arrest in Music History

Fela was at home when the cops showed up — again — this time trying to frame him by planting a joint in his house. But Fela, being Fela, didn’t flinch. He grabbed the evidence and swallowed it right in front of them. The police arrested him and waited days for him to, well… produce proof. What happened next became one of the wildest chapters in his story — and one of his most legendary songs: “Expensive Shit.”
